Have Knowledge, Will Travel

One thing I like about doing consulting work is that if affords me the opportunity to travel. I love seeing new places, revisiting favorite cities (Chicago, New York, San Francisco), and meeting interesting, intelligent people of different backgrounds. Although I do conduct a fair amount of my work remotely, visiting a client’s site early in a project always makes a difference and allows me to gain a deeper understanding of the organization’s dynamics. Business culture can and usually does play a key role in how well new technology is adopted and used by the people who comprise that business, regardless of what their role is and where they may fall on the org chart. That cultural element is difficult to convey through a phone call or web conference, which is why I always prefer to travel to wherever I need in order to support my clients. It also makes getting to know the primary stakeholders that much easier!
